Walking the dogs

posted Friday, 19 October 2007

So today I did my second tour of duty as a dog walker.  I'm in pretty good shape from all of my regular walking, but that is some workout!  Big dogs, most of them young, most of them tugging and jumping and untrained - they take their toll.  It's 2+ hours of constant movement.  I pick up a lot of dog poo.  A good deal of slurping goes down.  The dogs aren't really happy to see me, but they are ecstatic to get out of their little cages and sniff and pee on the Great Outdoors.

This morning it was raining out and, at one point, pouring.   I got seriously wet.  I walked 8 dogs - 2 Maxes, 1 Rosie, an Angel, an Ace, a Sasha, a Cloe, and a Natasha.  I walked Natasha, a pit bull mix, the longest.  She was a honey, very bright, but she was a handful to walk.  Very young.  Very energetic.  The easiest to walk were Angel, Cloe, and Sasha.  Sasha was an Australian cattle dog and very gun shy.  If I moved at all unexpectedly she flinched.  I couldn't help but feel mad at whoever was behind all of that flinching.  Angel, a big brown brindle pit bull was super sweet and a great walker.  She needed the love, so I obliged.  Cloe was a pretty black lab mix and very shy.  So nice, though.  I know she'll find a home soon.Bandit needs a family! Adopt him!

I was surprised at how many of the dogs I walked last week weren't there.  Since the dogs that are in the kennel stay in the kennel, per policy, until they are adopted, I'd say the Humane Society is pretty busy.  Goldie was gone in between a Saturday and a Thursday, and the H.S. is closed Sunday and Monday.  There are some longer term dogs including a high energy American Staffordshire Terrier named Bandit who is very smart, but a handful.  He's been there since May which is a shame because after a little exercise he calms right down and is a honey.  I liked him a lot, but Rosie would have a full cow if I brought him home.  She already turns up her snout at me when I come home smelling of other dogs.

So - I got my exercise this morning and so did 8 sweeties of varying sizes.
