Milo's Big Adventure/Rachel's Heart Attack

Friday, 16 October 2009 8:40 A GMT-05
So last night Milo got lost.  Or, at least, I had no idea where he was.  I am very careful with my dogs.  They have collars; they walk on leashes.  I supervise them pretty closely even when they are in the backyard.  Still, i

Meet Ruby

Saturday, 31 January 2009 9:06 A GMT-05
Here is our new girl, Ruby, a black and tan Coonhound.  She is about 2 years old.  We adopted her through Safe Haven Humane Society.  They serve an area that includes Montcalm County - where relinquished pets are frequently taken

Grief is funny

Sunday, 21 September 2008 7:57 A GMT-05
You find yourself saying things like, "I used to walk this way with Rosie," when you're walking the same everyday route.  Or you think about bagging up the dog hair you picked up off the floor...as a memorial.  Or you think se

RIP Rosemary "Rosie" Pie Potter, 1999-2008

Monday, 15 September 2008 2:32 P GMT-05
I brought Rosie in this morning to be put to rest.  I believe it was time.  She was so quickly going downhill physically and had lost interest in almost everything she had once loved.  I cried a lot last night and a lot more today.&nbs

Dog roller coaster

Monday, 8 September 2008 8:36 P GMT-05
So yesterday after Milo recovered from his surgery, I watched him like a hawk.  I slept next to him to make sure he was breathing, and checked his stitches rather obsessively.  I was on him like white on rice, and each and every time I caug

...and we have Milo back from the Animal Emergency Hospital all stitched up.  Today he decided he had to meet and greet with our neighbor dog, Spencer, who was sitting peacefully on the other side of our chain link fence, so he climbed said fenc

Been lazy about blogging...

...because not that much has been going on.  Let's see, what's happened?   Milo's casualties include: a wooden block watermelon of Max's another wooden blocka foam blockthe day lily flowerbed adjacent to the housethe gr

It takes about a month

Saturday, 3 May 2008 8:41 P GMT-05
I realized today that, despite all the muddy paw prints and all the extra time outdoors de-energizing, despite the bigger vet bill and the chewed up toys, there is no way I could take Milo back to the Humane Society and drop him off now.

2 things I am grateful for:

Monday, 14 April 2008 8:44 P GMT-05
I waited to get a puppy until it was spring.  We have spent a lot of time outdoors attempting to demonstrate the proper place to void to Milo, and I'm sure glad it's not 15 degrees and up to my knees in snow waiting for him to get this c

Dog of the Week: St. Milo

Wednesday, 9 April 2008 9:21 P GMT-05
Hmmmm...I wonder if there was an actual St. Milo[quick google]It appears there is a Blessed Milo of Selincourt.  But we will not be talking about him.  We will be talking about the Best Puppy in the World, our new puppy Milo.  What a g

I thought I had a spare kong around here...

...but I can't seem to find it.  I thought for sure that Rosie had one, once upon a time.  She hardly ever used it.   She was never a chewer.  In fact, she was never destructive at all.  So most of the toys we got, i

Dog of the Week: Hank

Tuesday, 1 April 2008 10:00 A GMT-05
Look at this guy.  Both pictures, he's saying: Bring it.  Not even the pink lead can diminish his machismo. I love the look of Hank, and I love his name.  He's a tough little dog, but agile and athletic, and really not too

Dog of the Week: Jazzy

Friday, 7 March 2008 10:00 A GMT-05
Look at this sweet girl: Jazzy.  If she were my dog, I'd name her Martha.  Something about her solid little face reminds me of the Susan Meddaugh Martha books.  Jazzy needs a loving home, and he deserves one.  He's got a

Three-legged dog with a four-legged heart

Friday, 29 February 2008 10:12 A GMT-05
I thought I'd give a little picture update on Rosie's amputation.  Here's my pretty girl, two months after having her leg lopped off.  She looks like she's sleeping, but really she's closing her eyes while cleaning the a

Dog of the Week: Blazzer

Wednesday, 13 February 2008 9:59 P GMT-05
Look at this guy - isn't he a handsome one?  He's a Lab mix.  His face looks Lab, but his fur is all fluffy like a Chow; soft too.  Blazzer's been at the Humane Society for awhile - he's had several fond relationships w

Dog of the Week: Lily

Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:03 A GMT-05
When I first met Lily back in October, I was rather put off by how hyperactive she was.   Taking her out of her kennel, she would immediately grab the leash and start tugging it.  And she would tug it as long as you put up with it.  Tu

Quick dog story

Monday, 28 January 2008 10:03 A GMT-05
I don't have a picture, yet, of Kashi, a cattle dog currently bunking at the humane society, but I thought I'd tell this story anyway because it's just so sweet.  Kashi is a medium-sized white cattle dog mix with gray and white fleck

RIP Aztec

Thursday, 24 January 2008 9:23 P GMT-05
I found out today that Atzec was euthanized because he was developing cage aggression.  I've thought about this all day, but can't think of anything else I could have done for him.  We weren't allowed to adopt him.  We did

Dog of the Week: Nadia

Monday, 21 January 2008 8:21 A GMT-05
Look at this funny little girl.  This is Nadia.  She's some kind of terrier and has what appears to me to be a serious ratting instinct.  This girl loves to tug and pull and jump and nip at things that move.

Adopted!

Saturday, 12 January 2008 11:11 P GMT-05
Today I had just about worn J. down about Kayla, the shepherd mix I blogged about awhile ago.  He finally agreed to bring Rosie in so the two could meet, and, as an afterthought I checked the Humane Society website before going and she was no lo

Highs and lows of walking the dogs

Saturday, 5 January 2008 9:26 P GMT-05
This week in the course of my volunteering at the Humane Society, I had a pretty traumatic experience - a bad dog fight.  It was my fault, but more of a matter of confusion and frustration than deliberate neglect.  Since it's gotten col

Rosie's amputation

Friday, 28 December 2007 7:55 A GMT-05
If you have a moment today, say a little prayer for Rosie.  She's getting her right leg amputated, or as Max says "chopped off," today.  Poor little bunchkin.  I hated to leave her at the vet's this morning, but I had

Dog of the Week: Khaki

Thursday, 6 December 2007 10:31 P GMT-05
I've been meaning to write about Khaki for awhile now.  Isn't she cute?  She's built low and strong like a bulldog, but she's a tan brindle and has much more of a pit/boxer face.  She's also very funny; she has a wa

The Perfect Dog

Wednesday, 21 November 2007 9:55 P GMT-05
I've been thinking a lot about Natasha, whom, as I've mentioned I like rather a lot.  But unfortunately the facts remain the same - I'm almost certain Rosie wouldn't like her, she's probably too energetic and reactive to live

There has to be a special place in Hell for...

Thursday, 25 October 2007 2:44 P GMT-05
