Spending Uncle George's bequest

posted Tuesday, 11 March 2008

HP DV6780

[Alternate title: Propping up the local economy

Here is where our tax refund is going.  I swear I've never done this before, blown our tax refund on something we just wanted.  For the last 9 years we've used all of the money, any time we had any coming to us, to pay down the mortgage.  But this year, since that's gone, and since Uncle George has so unwisely decided to gift us all with cash so that we may do our Patriotic Duty and spend [an idea that has inherent logical and ethical problems, but, hey, I'm not sending my check back], I persuaded J. that it was past time for a computer upgrade.  So this is what we are getting: a Hewlett Packard DV6700 series laptop.  Isn't she pretty?

We have no "regular computer," and since there are only two phone jacks in the house that work (thanks to the previous owners insane meddling with the phone panel) I thought we could solve the problem of multitudinous wires and goofy phone jacks by going wireless.  So we got a router too.  And DSL.  Woo hoo!  I've wanted, coveted, craved, and desired DSL for such a long time.  I made do with my slow dial up, but it was so limiting.  So since J. and I skipped birthday and Christmas presents to each other, and since Uncle George is being so foolishly generous to all of us, this is our big gift this year.  It arrives Friday and will usher in the era of

iGrerp

with its 3GB memory and superfast duo core processor.  Can't wait!

Woo hoo! You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE wireless + laptop. Oh boy. You deserve something nice -- you've been good and paid off your mortgage and now it's time for something that is fun.

Wow, it's beautiful! Congrats! I am so glad you are treating yourself to a new laptop and DSL. It has been a long time coming and well deserved. The laptop looks great, you did a good job shopping and finding just the right laptop to last a long time and do everything you want and much more. Can't wait to see it and can't wait to see your joy after having new and faster technology at your fingertips. Have fun and enjoy your gift from George.

Technically it is Uncle Sam, since he is the one feeding your hand with $$ you should give him credit. George will be gone before too long.

Congrats, Rachel. I don't want to come off like the complete technical dolt that I am - but could you tell me where to go or call or what website or book to check out to find out how to go wireless, get a "router", go DSL? I am currently crippled with a primitive dial up system that is very slow and I have been contemplating buying a laptop with my tax money, too. But I can't figure out how wireless works. Is it a simple matter of calling a cable provider such as Optimum on line and speaking to them? Sorry for all these questions. I tried to PM you privately but couldn't figure that out either!

Gwen - we had peoplepc dial-up and a six-year-old laptop. When we went into Best Buy we were told all the new laptops were configured for wireless (I think this has been the case for awhile, actually) and so computer-wise we were all set. To convert our new DSL to a wireless signal we had to buy a router which somehow hooks up to the modem our DSL provider sent us (which I installed myself; wasn't too hard). We got DSL by signing up with ATT which has made DSL available in our area already. We switched our local service to them too. Bundled with the DSL I don't think it will cost us a lot more than our previously separate phone and internet bills. We'll see.

In technical terms I have no idea how any of this works. Magic, I guess. But what I would do is figure out who in your area offers DSL most reasonably (ask around, call around), then go and purchase a laptop and ask what they recommend in a router. Just tell them you want to make your DSL wireless in your house. They will know what to sell you. The router wasn't that expensive (approx. $65), compared to the computer. As far as a laptop goes, J.'s computer-savvy colleague recommended that we get one with a 3 gig memory and a duo or quad core processor. Anything you get will be obsolete in a blink anyway, but 3 gigs of memory should last us a long, long time.

Hope that helps! Good luck to you.

Thanks so much for your help, Rachel. That does make it clearer.
