I guess I kept telling myself that I prefer straight romance, but I confess I love a good historical mystery. I just finished the third in the Sebastian St. Cyr series by C. S. Harris (aka Candice Proctor) - Why Mermaids Sing. The ending was so compelling that I'm having a hard time waiting for the next one - Where Serpents Sleep - which comes out in November. I have read a couple categories by Ryan and they were pretty good and I have a couple of her medievals in my TBR. I just found out my library has Still Life with Murder so I put a hold on it. Thanks for reminding me about this book.
left by: ReneeW

Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz

Give her another chance - but if she doesn't like Curse of the Spellmans, I don't know. It might be doomed. ;)

Do you know if there will be another book in this series?
left by: AAR Rachel

Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz

It sounds like you liked it as much as I did. This book is probably one of my favorites of the year, a definite A- (the mystery makes it not quite an A for me). The Dr. Who stuff in this one had me laughing out loud. The next one can't come out fast enough.

I recommend a friend read "The Spellman Files" on her vacation. When I asked her how she liked it and if she thought it was funny, she gave me a "meh". It made me wonder if I should be friends with a person who can't appreciate the Spellmans. Maybe I'll give her another chance with this book!
left by: jenreads

Once More with Feeling Series: Still Life with Murder by P.B. I tried Ryan's medievals, but wasn't really wowed by them. For me the Nell Sweeney series has definitely been the most enjoyable. I enjoyed it pretty consistently all the way through. But I doled them out one at a time, so as not to overdose.
left by: AAR Rachel

Some winter-related generalized anxiety

Margaret - it looks like you've got this down. For me the issue is more complicated than not liking to cook. J. has a different metabolism than I do and different food preferences. Basically all the food he likes, I don't and vice versa. And his mom did everything in the kitchen and so when I cook, he thinks it's only the norm for me to cook and clean up - which I hate.

I like lighter food and it's easier for me to maintain my weight with that. For him, that's not enough. Anyway, I'm sure I could really buckle down and make some changes that would work. I just haven't been motivated enough so far. I think that's going to have to change. Thanks for your comments.
left by: AAR Rachel

Some winter-related generalized anxiety

Mary - I LOVE The Tightwad Gazette. I have all 3 volumes. My dad has the original newsletters in binders and the follow up Christmas letters too.

Amy Dacyczyn is a goddess! I'm am not worthy to be considered a tightwad under her standards of tightwaddery.

Every so often, when I feel I need more inspiration, I get out those books and reread, both for tips and to feel I'm not alone.
left by: AAR Rachel

Some winter-related generalized anxiety

Crap, just posted a comment and it DISAPPEARED.

Anyway, what I said (shorter this time!) is that I HATE those articles -- cut out your daily starbucks and your iPhone and you're golden. Uh, NO.

I got The Tightwad Gazette as a wedding gift, lo these many years ago. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. LOTS of good stuff in there. This woman raised 6 kids on one income and made money on it. And they are decent tips, not cutting out your digital cable. If you google Tightwad Gazette, lots of stuff comes up from the author.
left by: mary

Some winter-related generalized anxiety

We've limited our eating out to once a week, definately not easy and I feel your pain. I do get tired of cooking...especially in the summer. To ease the pain of home cooking I try new recipes, stick to some proven favourites, try to include soup and/or salad before the main dish, serve dinner rolls, lots of little extras...pickles, cheese etc. I also try to motivate myself by calculating the per person cost of homemade meals...it's really eye opening. I recently found a nice way to do roast beef by following a traditional English recipe. All that said, I still like eating out more! Your jam looks yummy!
left by: Margaret

Once More with Feeling Series: Still Life with Murder by P.B. I think it's my favorite of Ryan's, which is saying something since I enjoyed most of her medieval romances very much as well. I didn't finish the whole Nell and Will series, though -- only got as far as the third book. I have the other three TBR, but as I mentioned before, my reading preference tends to be for the novelty of books with new characters rather than a contiuning series that follows the same characters.

I really miss Ryan's historical romances. She is writing straight erotica now under the name Louisa Burton, but straight erotica isn't really my thing. But if she ever returns to historical romance, I am so there.
left by: janine

Once More with Feeling Series: The Dream Hunter by Laura Kinsale

I agree TDH it's not as humorous or endearing as TSATS, but to me, it is more fascinating than FFTS, largely because I think Zenia is a more complex character than either Maddy or Jervaulx. I can really dig into her psychologically in a way that I can't into the characters in FFTS.

I also love the visual imagery in TDH -- I want to call it cinematic, if that makes sense. More than any other romance I've read, I can see it in my mind and I can imagine seeing it on a big screen.

And then there's all the mirroring in the storyline -- for example, the way Zenia's choices with Beth mirror her mother's choices with herself and Arden's father's choices with Arden. I love the way the book touches on how everyone is shaped by their parents and their upbringing.

I also love that Zenia, who is from the desert, feels more at home in England than Arden, who is from England, while he feels more at home in the desert.

I could go on, but I've probably said enough. Suffice to say that it has different strengths than other Kinsales, since it's a different book, but that doesn't make it lesser in my eyes.

BTW, my column on Kinsale at DA is up now.
left by: janine

Once More with Feeling Series: The Dream Hunter by Laura Kinsale

I just finished it again, Janine - took it with me on vacation. My opinion stands. I think Dream Hunter is a very solid, touching romance, full of complex and realistic characterization, and some touches of humor. It also has a dash-a-tear-away ending. The last few chapters are so sweet. It's not as funny or endearing as TSATS, though or as fascinating and impressive, POV-wise, as FFTS. So not my fave Kinsale, but far, far better than most historical romance.
left by: AAR Rachel

This Consumer Reports: Vegetable Thins and Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza

I totally agree with you regarding the tragic decline of the Vegetable Thins. After my father went shopping I was stoked to see a box of them in our kitchen cupboard, but to my dismay, I noticed right away that the vegetable shape of the crackers were gone. I thought this was no big deal, as long as they tasted the same, but alas, it was not to be :( I miss the tangy zippy flavor of the old Vegetable Thins, what a shame!
left by: Lauren
