grerp: the PERSONAL side of AAR Rachel

Renewed the blog (for another year)

posted Tuesday, 3 March 2009

Money is tight this month at Chez Potter.  I put a lot of money into the 1997 Escort last week to keep it running, and the homeowner's insurance ($743) is also due.  Max's school registration, along with $75, has to be paid by the 13th too.  And the car insurance is now up $75 a month because of the new truck.  Ugh.

I haven't eaten out for 11 days in an attempt to stem the money flow.  I'm not sure I've actually ever cooked as much as I have in the last couple of weeks.   I've made three pots of soup (lentil, pea, turkey),  a double batch of my grandmother's rolls, and eaten leftovers galore.  You can actually see to the back of my fridge, it's so eaten down.

The thing is, I do have savings.  There is a TON of food in this house, either frozen, canned, or stored.  It's just the economic news is making me nuts.   DOW at 6700 for the first time since the mid-1990's, new layoffs announced every day, rumors of a 21st century Depression.  The government doesn't seem to know anything about basic economics, either, with their plans to expand programs exponentially when we appear to be so far in the hole a yell for help just echoes and dissipates on the long way up.   The Bush administration overspent, but the Obama administration doesn't seem to grasp the basic concept of "If you don't have any money, you can't buy anything."  Their proposed Rent-A-Center budget scares the crap out of me, and I'm worried about what will happen to charities and non-profits when the tax incentives are removed.  Like they aren't in danger enough of going under already.

In any case, I haven't had so much time to blog lately, with my expanded responsibilities for AAR, but I decided to go ahead and renew at blog-city for another year anyway.  If you read the blog and would like to keep reading my meandering thoughts on books, dogs, motherhood, and thrift, leave me a message.  I'd love to hear from you, know who's out there reading this humble blog.

Glad to hear you renewed Rachel. I love your musings on finances, ways to save, seeds, gardens, dogs, Max... As a non-resident of the US the economy is driving me nuts, too. My country is doing better than most, (love our regulated banking), but it is a global economy and everyone is being affected. We eat out once a week, and it really is a treat. It's quite a chore to keep meals at home interesting. Variety helps.

Rachel, I am glad you renewed for another year. I really enjoy reading your blog - especially Max-stories, and also for all your reviews. I was just thinking that blogs are both personal and yet impersonal at the same time. Your Max-stories which, without a blog, would only be shared with your family and friends - but now, we can all chuckle over them wherever we are in the world. Max is such a lovely little boy, and some of his antics remind me of my little brother. The economy is bad right now, but it will recover. And home-cooking is good - at least you know what's in it!

Thanks for your comments, Margaret and msaggie - I'm so glad I'm not boring you with my thrift musings and Max stories! That's good to hear.
