grerp: the PERSONAL side of AAR Rachel

This Consumer Reports: Flonase (was: Medical miracle)

posted Tuesday, 26 September 2006

This fall I've tried something new - Flonase.  It is such a miracle.  Usually around this time of year I'm just miserable with allergies.  A month or so ago, my parents gave me a box of old papers they had of mine in the basement, and one of them was the results of my allergy testing, done when I was in college.  It was kind of funny to read through it - basically I'm allergic to all deciduous material and cats.  Which explains a lot.  Once upon a time there was Seldane which worked like a charm for me.  I'd pop one before going to a house with a cat, and it was like I didn't even have allergies.  No tears, no drainage, no red skin, no itching.  Then they found out that Seldane taken with something else (antibiotics?) can lead to heart problems, so they took it off the market.  Unhappy day!  I mean, I wasn't taking antibiotics, and I wasn't going to sue, but...whatever.  I suppose better safe than sorry.  Well, whatever they replaced Seldane with (Claritin?), it just didn't work for me.  So I've had allergy issues ever since.  And even more allergy issues when I wasn't supposed to take meds because we were trying to get pregnant.

But now [cue music] there's Flonase.  Man, this stuff is great.  It's an inhalor.  I've been snorting up every morning, and it's like it isn't even fall.  Today I even cleaned the garage, something almost guaranteed to make me completely miserable, and tonight I'm fine.

Good stuff!

Addendum (1/16/07): in the last two weeks this blogging has received almost 800 hits.  Will anyone tell me where all of this traffic is coming from?  Please?

Rachel, have you ever tried Allegra or Zyrtec? I've known some people who say that one will work for them when another of the three won't. Check with your doctor and see if he/she can give you some samples to see if either of them might work.

I've tried Allegra, but I'm not sure about Zyrtec. Allegra doesn't work for me, and neither does Claritin which is now over-the-counter. I've got some kind of generic tablet thingee my doctor gave me too for days when the flonase isn't quite enough. I had one of them this weekend. I was triple medicated - flonase, tablet, and menthol drop, and still sneezing!

But - the good (?) news is that this week it's going to freeze, so that should help allergy sufferers like me. I'm not looking forward to the cold, but, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. :)
