grerp: the PERSONAL side of AAR Rachel

J.'s employer is in the news

posted Friday, 27 February 2004
ITT Technical Institute's headquarters was taken over by the feds on Wednesday, who are investigating the company's records of student attendance, graduation, and recruitment.

For us, this means that he will probably not receive his paycheck today. As long as he gets it relatively soon, I'm not concerned. It would be an awful thing, though, if the investigation led to ITT's closing its campuses. Especially right now when our homestudy is complete and we are counting on J. to be the family breadwinner after the adoption.

We had yet another thrilling argument last night about what happens if he loses his job. J.'s response is always, "We'll move - wherever I can get a job." My response to that is, "Move away from my family? Never! How can you ask that of me? And especially now when I'm going to need the support more than ever with the baby." Then he says, "I'm not working at McDonald's, Rachel. There are no library jobs here in W. Michigan. I'm not going to let us starve!" And then I say, "Well, let's just look around a little before we flee the area. This is my home! Doesn't that mean anything to you? Heck, I have a job. You can stay home and be Mr. Mom." And then he looks at me incredulously. Around and around it goes, with both of us panicking.

This is incredibly unproductive. We should just tape this conversation and play it back whenever the topic arises again. We'd save our breath and leave it to the machine to get angry for us.
