Books purchased new in 2009

posted Friday, 30 October 2009

Since I do this every month for Eagerly Awaiting (I put this feature together), I thought I'd look back and see what panned out for me out of the books I parted with hard-earned money for.  If this seems a meager number, remember we are on a very fixed budget.  Also, I didn't really have that much time to read until Max went to school this fall.

Yes.  I have the rest of the series, and as a whole, it's great.
The Surgeon's Lady by Carla Kelly The Surgeon's Lady by Carla Kelly
Paperback
$4.49 MeijerHaven't read yet.  See above comments re: Carla Kelly resale value.
Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas
Paperback
$5.24 MeijerYes, worth the money.  Better than Delicious, although still not as good as Private Arrangements.  The central conflict here was a little thin - either that or the heroine is just too damned sensitive for her own good because this marriage could have been save with one long, painful conversation.  Road romances aren't my favorite, but this one, involving as it does a Muslim uprising against the British in India/Pakistan was historically interesting.
True Love and Other Disasters by Rachel Gibson True Love and Other Disasters by Rachel Gibson
Paperback
$7.99 Target? No.  I really need to stop buying Gibson.  I keep hoping for another Simply Irresistible or Truly, Madly Yours experience.  Hasn't happened.
To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt
Paperback
$6.99 Target? No.  The only keeper of this series for me was To Seduce a Sinner.  I'm getting To Desire a Devil from the library.
Marrying the Captain by Carla Kelly Marrying the Captain by Carla Kelly

Scandal by Carolyn Jewel Scandal by Carolyn Jewel

$7.99 Can't rememberNo.  Started strong, but petered out and was a DNF.
Too Good to Be True by Kristan Higgins Too Good to Be True by Kristan Higgins Paperback

I agree that To Seduce a Sinner has been the best one of this series so far, and the only DIK for me of the three I've read. I haven't read the latest one yet, but I'm still excited about it from the excerpt I read at the end of Beast.

Gibson is in danger of dropping off my buy list as well. While I've enjoyed her last two books, they just don't come close to measuring up to most of her backlist -- my favorites being See Jane Score, Tangled Up In You, and The Trouble with Valentine's Day. I'll still read her next book, but won't have the high expectations I had with the last two.

Oh, and I hope you enjoy Hot Under Pressure as much as I did. She's got another Blaze coming out in January that I'm so excited about.

I'd call all the Kelly books worth it, including the anthology (although the only really good story in that one was Kelly's...the Stone wasn't bad, but the last story (Ranstrom) was dumb. Unfortunately, I have trouble reading just one story in an anthology. I always read them in order, too. You know, in case the anthology police pop by.

Wow! Very impressed by the organization. I usually just sell the forgettable books at the UBS after the plots and characters fallen out of my memory. If I did something like this, though, I probably wouldn't fall into the trap of forgetting and then buying an author new when all of her books end up clocking in as C reads for me.
