grerp: the PERSONAL side of AAR Rachel

Bitching

posted Tuesday, 9 September 2003
Okay, could there be more pregnant people in this week's issue of People? It should be temporarily titled Modern Celebrity Mother. Brooke Shields is on the cover with her new (and darling) baby, Rowan. Then flipping the page you encounter Kate Hudson (due in winter), Reese Witherspoon (due in December), Jill Hennessy (due in October), Heather Mills McCartney (due in November), and possibly Christy Turlington.

Overkill much? I get it. I get it. Do I have to see another bulging belly?

Plus, then the article about Shields goes on to state that Shields got her happy ending the old fashioned way - she earned it. Via 7 IVF treatments. She paid her dues. Well, I'm very happy for Brooke. Really, I am. I hope she enjoys sweet little Rowan. But at $5,000 - $15,000 a pop, most couples can't afford 7 in vitro fertilizations. They can't earn their happy endings because it would put them into poverty.

I hate these types of articles. They make it seem like infertility is just another "Dream it, Do it" scenario, where if you try hard enough, you can achieve your dream. Madonna can have a child at 42? You can too! Most people don't have that kind of money to spend on a late in life pregnancy, and these articles lull women into a sense of "I've still got time" complacency. It makes me mad. Sometimes you just don't have the time left. I started at 28. 28! I wish they would profile more women like Sharon Stone who tried and failed and adopted and got on with her life. Or people who decided to be childless even.

Celebrity articles I can empathize.

You know the issues I hate, the ones about celebrities losing weight. I could lose weight too if I could afford a personal chef or have the Zone diet pre made meals fed exed to my house each morning. I could lose weight if I could afford a personal trainer. I could lose weight if my job allowed me three hours a day to work out.

Really it drives me nuts when People goes see how actress X lost 30 lbs in 6 wks.

Yeah, right. I'm trying to diet right now. Normally I spend $40 a week on food, buying fresh veggies and meat cost me $140 last weekend. Being thin and healthy costs money.

If you have to hear someone's pregnancy success story I'm sure you'd prefer it be someone average like you that can talk about the issue and frustration on your level.

Re: Celebrity articles Yes! My mom always gets upset at those celebrity weight loss ones and doesn't so and so look good. Well, yes...they do. They have personal trainers, personal chefs and it's a tax write off for them because they have to look good. I could do it too if I had that money!

That's just insensitivity...with pregnancy and weight loss at it's best. Why make the average person feel badly like that? Rachel..hang tough cookie!
